Reflections from UNHCR’s Regional Reception at the CRVS Conference
Date: June 24, 2025
Location: Bangkok, Thailand
Speaker: Subin Mulmi, Executive Director, Nationality for All (NFA)
At the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Conference in Bangkok, NFA’s Executive Director, Subin Mulmi, had the honor of speaking at a special UNHCR reception marking the launch of the new regional report, Ending Statelessness Together.
This powerful publication celebrates the work of activists, communities, and organizations across the Asia-Pacific region who are leading the fight to end statelessness and advance the right to nationality.
Honoring Progress and People-Led Change
In his remarks, Subin reflected on the significant progress made across the region — highlighting positive developments in Turkmenistan, Thailand, and the Philippines, where governments have taken important steps toward reducing statelessness and ensuring legal identity for all.
He also underscored the emergence of impacted-persons-led organizations as one of the most transformative shifts in the regional statelessness movement. These groups are not only advocating for their rights but also reshaping the way national and international actors engage with the issue.
“The meaningful participation of impacted persons is not optional — it’s non-negotiable.
Ending statelessness requires centering the voices, leadership, and lived experiences of those most affected.”
— Subin Mulmi, Executive Director, Nationality for All
A Moment of Reflection and Celebration
For NFA, being featured in Ending Statelessness Together is both an honor and a reminder of the collective journey that defines this movement. The report reflects years of collaboration, perseverance, and solidarity among advocates, practitioners, and communities across the region.
It also serves as a testament to the shared belief that ending statelessness is possible — when governments, civil society, and impacted persons work together with trust and commitment.
