NFA’s Executive Director, Subin Mulmi, had the honor of delivering the Keynote Address at the opening session of the 14th Online Course on Statelessness, organized by the Department of International Refugee Law and Migration Law of the International Institute of Humanitarian Law (IIHL).
The Online Course brought together around 40–50 senior and mid-level government officials, civil society representatives, UN agencies, and academics from around the world, all working to strengthen protection for stateless persons and advance legal and policy responses.
In his keynote presentation, Subin provided a comprehensive overview of the global and regional landscape of statelessness, highlighting both the challenges faced by stateless persons today and the opportunities for collective action. He emphasized:
- The urgent need to ensure the inclusion of stateless persons in national systems such as CRVS and digital ID;
- The critical role of community-based approaches and whole-of-society partnerships in achieving sustainable change; and
- The importance of impacted persons’ leadership in advocacy and reform efforts.
The keynote also explored the intersections between statelessness and displacement, as well as the evolving role of regional and international cooperation, including the Global Alliance to End Statelessness, in supporting States’ commitments under the #IBelong Campaign.
This session set the tone for the four-week course, which covered themes such as:
- The causes and impacts of statelessness;
- The identification and protection of stateless persons;
- Climate change and statelessness; and
- The international response and prevention mechanisms.
The engagement reaffirmed NFA’s ongoing commitment to capacity-building, regional cooperation, and knowledge sharing to end statelessness and promote the right to nationality across the Asia Pacific.
