NFA Participates in the 2024 PILNet Global Forum

Advancing Legal Action to Realize the Right to Nationality

Date: 12–14 November 2024
Venue: Bangkok, Thailand
Event Organised by: PILNet

Nationality for All’s Executive Director, Subin Mulmi, participated in the 2024 PILNet Global Forum held from 12–14 November 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand. The annual Global Forum brought together hundreds of representatives from law firms, civil society organisations, academia, and legal aid groups from around the world to discuss strategies for strengthening access to justice and public interest law.

During the Forum, Subin spoke as a panelist in the session titled “Litigating the Right to Nationality: Legal Action to Combat Statelessness.” The discussion explored how strategic litigation can be used to advance the right to nationality, challenge gender-discriminatory laws, and protect the rights of stateless persons.

Subin also shared reflections on the recently launched Toolkit on Strategic Litigation on Nationality Rights, highlighting its potential to guide practitioners, advocates, and community organisations in effectively using the law to drive systemic change. The toolkit can be downloaded here: https://www.refworld.org/en/download/149069

Emphasizing the Role of Pro Bono Partnerships

Throughout the three-day event, NFA engaged in discussions and workshops with global partners to underscore the importance of pro bono legal support for civil society organisations working on statelessness, particularly stateless-led groups and community-based initiatives.

By strengthening collaboration between law firms, legal networks, and advocacy organisations, NFA continues to advocate for a legal ecosystem that empowers communities affected by statelessness to claim their rights and participate meaningfully in justice processes.

Looking Ahead

NFA’s participation in the PILNet Global Forum reaffirmed our belief that litigation, when grounded in human stories and community partnerships, can be a powerful tool for justice and equality. We look forward to building on the connections and insights gained from the Forum to advance strategic, rights-based approaches to ending statelessness across the Asia-Pacific region.
