Nationality for All (NFA) participated in an official side event at the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) 2026, titled “Youth Statelessness as a Governance Gap: GCM and GCR Complementarities in Strengthening Legal Identity Frameworks in Asia-Pacific.”
The event was co-organized with UNHCR and partners, and brought together policymakers, practitioners, and advocates to examine the challenges and opportunities in addressing youth statelessness in the region.
About the Event
Youth affected by statelessness continue to face significant barriers in accessing legal identity, education, employment, and meaningful participation in society. These challenges are often exacerbated by gaps in governance systems and limited coordination across global and regional frameworks.
This side event explored how the Global Compact on Migration (GCM) and the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR) could be leveraged together to strengthen inclusive legal identity systems, with a particular focus on the Asia-Pacific region.
Key Focus Areas
- Understanding youth statelessness as a governance and policy challenge
- Strengthening legal identity frameworks through coordinated global commitments
- Identifying gaps in implementation of GCM and GCR commitments
- Promoting inclusive approaches that center the experiences of stateless youth
