Asia-Pacific Launch of the Legal Atlas on Gender Discrimination in Nationality Laws

Advancing gender-equal nationality rights through evidence, dialogue, and regional collaboration

Bangkok, Thailand

Nationality for All (NFA) convened a regional event in Bangkok to mark the Asia-Pacific launch of the Legal Atlas on Gender Discrimination in Nationality Laws, alongside a high-level roundtable discussion with experts, advocates, and partners from across the region.

The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to examine the current state of nationality laws in the Asia-Pacific and their impact on gender equality. Through a combination of country presentations and interactive discussions, participants highlighted the persistent legal and structural barriers that continue to affect women and their families.

Across the region, discriminatory nationality laws continue to result in far-reaching consequences, including barriers to citizenship, residence rights, and equal access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and employment. The discussions emphasized that these challenges are not only legal in nature but also deeply social and economic, affecting generations of families.

About the Legal Atlas

The Legal Atlas on Gender Discrimination in Nationality Laws is a global tool designed to support research, advocacy, and reform efforts. It provides:

  • A visual, comparative overview of countries with gender-discriminatory nationality laws
  • Country-specific legal analysis on the impact of these laws on rights and access to services
  • A platform for stakeholders to engage with data and advance evidence-based advocacy

The Atlas serves as a key resource for policymakers, civil society organizations, and advocates working to promote equal nationality rights worldwide.

Key Discussions and Reflections

The roundtable created a space for critical dialogue on advancing gender-equal nationality laws in the region. Key reflections included:

  • Reframing the narrative:
The importance of shifting discussions from a narrow focus on statelessness toward a broader framework of gender equality and rights.
  • Leveraging global frameworks:
Opportunities to advance reform through international mechanisms such as CEDAW, CRC, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the Global Refugee Forum.
  • Strengthening regional collaboration:
The need for coordinated advocacy strategies across countries to address shared challenges and amplify impact.
  • Building momentum for collective action:
Strong interest in advancing this agenda through regional convenings, including the potential for a regional summit and collective pledges.

Looking Ahead

The Asia-Pacific launch of the Legal Atlas underscored both the urgency and the opportunity to advance gender-equal nationality rights. While significant challenges remain, the discussions reflected a growing regional momentum toward reform.

Moving forward, NFA and its partners will continue to support efforts to translate dialogue into concrete legal and policy change, working toward a region where nationality laws uphold equality, dignity, and inclusion for all.
